I remember witnessing the self-checkout evolvement growing up and worrying about the aftermath of the impact of automation on working citizens.
This is yet another reason why the worry has stuck with me all these years.
Do I believe that technology is incredible? Yes.
Do I believe that too much technology (especially automated) is hindering the very elements that foster our human nature? Also yes.
In the United States, the United Auto Workers (UAW) announced a hefty strike where approximately 25,000 auto workers are striking against Stellantis, Ford, and General Motors (GM) in an effort to receive higher wages to offset the inflation rates and secure their jobs in the midst of Biden’s Electric Vehicle (EV) mandates.
The striking auto workers are understandably worried about Biden’s green agenda completely eliminating their jobs.
Shawn Fain, the president of UAW, stated that the shift to green manufacturing is already well underway, and the three biggest automakers are taking billions of dollars from government subsidies to transition into fully electric. The benefits aren’t trickling down to UAW members.
Fain also shared that “when GM announced plans to build a new Lordstown plant, people thought this could be the opportunity that finally made their communities whole again. In 2022, GM opened Ultium Cells. It’s a joint venture with LG, which produces battery cells for electric vehicles. Residents were pitched on a new facility, bringing good paying, green jobs back to Lordstown. What they found was a far cry from what was promised.” He added, “Workers at Lordstown Assembly were on track to make upwards of $30/hour. The new green jobs at the Ultium plant, $16.50/hour, going up to $20/hour after seven years. Ultium cut auto wages in half.”
Fain stated, “At the end of 2022, Ultium workers voted overwhelmingly to unionize with the UAW. Now they’re joining hundreds of thousands of UAW members across the country, fighting for a better future. A new industry is being born, new standards are being set. This is our defining moment. It’s not just about Lordstown. The Big Three are building joint venture battery plants in Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and everywhere our message is the same. Our communities and our country deserve good, safe, living wage union jobs. It’s time to build an EV industry that puts workers first.”

Everywhere, our message is the same: Our country deserves good, safe, living-wage union jobs.

Many of us knew that technology would replace manpower in manufacturing. I wonder how many of those striking workers, (my nephew is among them) voted for Resident Biden?
