December 23, 2019Comedian Whitney Cummings says she was reprimanded by HR after she told an agnostic intern “Merry Christmas.”
She appeared on Conan O’Brien, where she outlined the incident:
“I was leaving… I was like, ‘Bye, guys. Merry Christmas.’ Like just a formality, what you would say,” Cummings explained. “I come back, like, June 6th. H.R. calls me and they’re like, ‘Hey, we need to talk to you. One of the interns is pissed off that you said ‘Merry Christmas.'”
Cummings said she meant nothing deeper by the rather generic holiday phrase.
“I don’t even care how your Christmas was,” Cummings said. “I just meant it as a formality. That’s what you say when you leave, right?”
Right. Plenty of people say “Merry Christmas” as a generic greeting or farewell. They’re not trying to make a religious statement.
O’Brien interjected that “Merry Christmas” is triggering to some people. “In these times that we’re in, that could trigger someone or offend them if it’s not their holiday,” he said.
Maybe people should be less sensitive. Of course we should respect the beliefs of others. But Christmas is ubiquitous and has become a secular, seasonal celebration as much as it is a religious tradition in this country. Something like 90% of Americans celebrate Christmas, either as a religious or a cultural holiday.
Besides, I bet the same people who get upset over hearing “Merry Christmas” would bend over backwards to accommodate a Muslim who wished them a “Happy Eid-ul-Adha.”
Cumming’s story comes just days after the left freaked out about Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch saying “Merry Christmas” on Fox News, calling the phrase a “Republican talking point.”
I find the whole “Merry Christmas” “controversy” ridiculous. Religious beliefs aside, Christmas is a federal holiday in the United States. In that sense, it’s really no different to tell someone “Merry Christmas” than it is to wish them a “Happy Labor Day.” If you have a problem with Christmas, go petition the government to remove its federally recognized status. In the meantime, I’ll probably keep wishing you a “Merry Christmas” until federal agencies are open normal business hours on Christmas Day.
