President Trump caught a lot of people by surprise by announcing his intentions to withdraw troops from Syria. Heck– that was the last we saw of Mattis.
Previously, Trump said ISIS was defeated, but I’ve caught him toning down his words. Now he says they WILL be completely defeated. It’s hard to say they’re totally defeated when they’re out there taking responsibility for attacks on US forces in Syria.
However, it doesn’t sound like Trump is modifying his overall position.
I inherited a total mess in Syria and Afghanistan, the “Endless Wars” of unlimited spending and death. During my campaign I said, very strongly, that these wars must finally end. We spend $50 Billion a year in Afghanistan and have hit them so hard that we are now talking peace…

….after 18 long years. Syria was loaded with ISIS until I came along. We will soon have destroyed 100% of the Caliphate, but will be watching them closely. It is now time to start coming home and, after many years, spending our money wisely. Certain people must get smart!

“We will soon have destroyed 100% of the Caliphate, but will be watching them closely.” See what I mean? He’s not TOTALLY claiming victory anymore. (Like I said before, I thought it was kinda premature to begin with.)
Foreign policy is a tricky business. I really don’t know WHAT we should do.
