Always Pads/HelloFlo wants to sell you a #periodstarterkit. So they made this adorably weird little video about a “Period Fairy.”
I’m quite certain that I’m not going to use a Period Fairy to teach my 7-year old daughter about her period. First, by the time she’s old enough to get her first period, I’m pretty sure that she’ll be over the fairy stuff. And second, in no way has my period ever been tied to a mythical creature, mansplainers (dudes are baaaaaad, of course!), or she-roes. And neither will hers. I can never in my right mind describe periods – or feminine hygiene, for that matter – as “vagical.” Basically, I try to avoid lying to my kid. You know.
Perhaps I’m too old and jaded to remember when we just privately handled our biological business without trying to publicize it to the world, instead of slapping some tulle on it, hashtagging it and attempting to make it like, totes adorbs, blood sisters? Amirite, like OMG!
But on the other hand, hats off to capitalism, even though the Ban Bossy sign in the background makes me think this little girl will hate it when she gets into Oberlin College one day. They’re gonna sell MILLIONS of these kits, and bravo! Because people are sheep, man. And moms will actually buy this she-ro, Santa-Claus-looks-like-somebodys-drunk-uncle-period crap.
America.
