Performance art is stupid. And dangerous. And gross.
If you don’t believe me, click on any of the sourcelinks above. One will take you to the story of artist Poppy Jackson, who asked volunteers to donate their menstrual blood for her performance. (She once stood in the corner of a room for 7 hours straight. Naked and menstruating. Because art.)
The other will take you to another naked woman performing her art. Her performance involved standing on ladders and pushing paint-filled eggs out of her vagina and onto a blank canvas. “PlopEgg Painting” is all about the “symbolic strength of the casual and the creative power of the femininity.”
For real.
In case you haven’t had enough of the ridiculous displays of naked hippy performance art, there’s this.
Meet Lisa Levy. She’s a “conceptual artist and comedian.” And as you know, female comedians and female artists have something in common: They both like to be naked.
For Levy’s latest performance, she sat on toilet at Christopher Stout Gallery. Completely naked. For five hours. Two different times.
“I’m not doing this just to get attention. It’s sort of a personal expression,” Levy said.
She called her performance “The Artist is Humbly Present.” (Basically a spoof on Marina Abramovic’s “The Artist is Present.”) Onlookers were encouraged to sit on the toilet across from her and take it all in.
I’m not joking.
“My idea is to recreate that experience — except that I’m in a completely vulnerable place instead of an elevated experience. It’s a let’s-have-fun kind of thing, free and comfortable,” Levy said.
Before the performance, she wrote, “I’m also tired of the bull***t trendy art dialogue about how the art world is driven by rich people who want shiny work and don’t care about meaning as well…But mostly, I think it will be weirdly fun to be naked in public.”
Clearly, she cares about meaning. Clearly. Please ignore her obvious obsession with being naked. This is about something far greater.
“We are ridiculously self-conscious about nudity. We equate nudity and sex. Nudity and sex are two different things,” she said. “People are obsessed with whether I’ll be peeing in there, but I am not. The bottom line is going to be the experience.”
They call these naked people artists. I call them dirty hippies.
