The following statement by DHS Secretary Mayorkas is a glorious example of using real statistics to manipulate the narrative and thereby the people. You see, just as the most effective lies have a grain of truth, so do the most effective manipulations uses real statistics and facts. They did it all the time during Covid, and now he’s doing it with the Biden Border Crisis.
In this clip, he’s asked a question about dealing with the massive invasion at our southern border. His response is a political non-answer where he instead pats himself on the back by declaring,
“We, um, uh, last year, uh, removed, returned, and expelled approximately 1.4 million individuals. That is the most in any one year.”
Mayorkas brags about removing 1.4 million illegal immigrants last year.

Now, let’s break this down. First, we are expected to assume that this is an accurate statistic representing the number of individuals who have been removed, returned, or expelled after illegally crossing the southern border. That’s the implication here. To be completely honest with you, I don’t know that I trust it on its face because who knows what they’re counting in that 1.4 million. Remember how “Covid deaths” included completely unrelated deaths with a positive Covid test at the time of death, like a car accident or drowning? We don’t know who, what, or how they’re counting, and we should always assume they are manipulating the statistics to best serve their agenda.
But if we assume that this is an accurate statistic, then we can move on to how meaningless this statistic really is as stated by Mayorkas. It’s probably true that 1.4 million is “the most in any one year.” But now consider the context that we’ve had almost 6 million immigrants flood across our open southern border since Biden took office, which is absolutely unprecedented. And when you let more illegal immigrants in, there are more you can remove, return, or expel. It makes sense that they’d have “the most in any one year,” and yet that number may not be as impressive when you consider all the relevant context. It’s similar to forcing everyone out of their jobs and then suddenly letting everyone go back to work, then claiming you “created” more jobs than any other modern president. If you don’t tell the whole story, it’s easier to use that story for your own agenda. It’s the context of the statistic that’s important.
What percentage of illegal immigrants does that 1.4 million represent and how does that percentage compare to other years? What was the cost of removing, returning, and expelling them compared to what the cost would have been to prevent them from illegally entering our country in the first place? How many of those expelled simply crossed again? Context matters.
