I don’t know if any of you have watched The Middle, but that was one of my all-time favorite lines from all nine seasons. If you’re looking for a good, more recent, sit-com, there’s my recommendation.
Anyway… I’m about to present you with yet another instance of libs being libs. Wasting money on dumb bullsh*t that no one really cares about when all is said and done. One of the only constants of our times, unfortunately…

In a demonstration of its “commitment to inclusion,” the Purdue University Student Government agreed to allocate $17,000 for a “rainbow crosswalk” during its last official meeting of the school year.
Resolution author Lillian Ferguson said the high cost of the project is due to its “more resilient” thermoplastic design in lieu of mere paint. She noted such materials would give the crosswalk a decade of life before it would need repairs or replacement.
Some student senators raised concerns about the environmental impact of the thermoplastics; however, Senator and Boiler Green Initiative President Anna Hampton said the materials are “environmentally friendly enough” and added “There’s already a lot of plastic around anyway.”
Others objected to the price of the crosswalk, noting its construction was merely a “performative action.” But Student Government Treasurer Sean Wiseman noted there would be no money lost as any unspent (student gov.) funds at the end of the year end up going back to the university anyway.
The crosswalk project ended up being approved overwhelmingly by a vote of 25 to 1 (with one abstention).
I’d just like to take a moment to highlight the “There’s already a lot of plastic around anyway” comment. I actually found that hilarious. She said the quiet part out loud, which is quickly becoming one of my top three forms of humor.
They don’t really care about any of this. Climate change doesn’t really matter when it becomes inconvenient… just like everything else.
The sad part about this is… $17k sounds like a lot, but to these big-box universities… it’s just crumbs. I love that scholarship money is almost nonexistent with a 4.0 GPA, and tuition is ridiculously inflated, but schools spend resources on this sh*t. I bet if you interviewed college students on campus about whether they should paint the crosswalk or create a new scholarship, their answers would be… interesting. If there’s one thing that brings us together, it’s the knowledge that we’re being robbed blind…
Also… I’m not sure how having people walk, and cars drive, over the rainbow flag wouldn’t be considered disrespectful, but… welcome to clown world.

Once the project is finished, someone will complain about the disrespectful element you mentioned (walking and driving on the rainbow flag), and then the very same students will (without even recognizing the irony) overwhelmingly vote to spend at least 17 k (or more) to remove the now offensive bit of virtue signaling.
Because the Perpetually Offended ™ are always tirelessly at work.
