January 20, 2023Victim blaming is literally the act of blaming the victim of a crime for that crime having been committed, rather than blaming the person who committed the crime. The most easily understood example of victim blaming is when a woman gets raped and people say something like, “Well, she shouldn’t have been wearing such provocative clothing” or “she shouldn’t have been flirting with him.” This, of course, implies that the rape victim was to blame for her own rape, as though she was asking for it by dressing in a way that somehow forced her rapist to rape her. This also absolves the rapist of some measure of accountability by shifting some of the blame for the criminal actions from the perpetrator to the victim.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot pretty much just victim blamed in the first mayoral debate, and I’m not at all surprised. When asked about the skyrocketing crime in her city, she explained that she has a “concrete solution” to address the fact that street vendors are being targeted for crime. She says she would “make sure that their money is secure, not use [cash] if at all possible, use other forms of transactions to take care of themselves.”
She’s basically telling street vendors to dress less provocatively so they won’t get raped rather than substantively addressing the rapists running around the streets. Her plan isn’t about taking the violent criminals who are targeting street vendors off the streets. Her plan is for street vendors to make themselves less attractive targets for those criminals. And while I agree that street vendors should take every precaution against the violent criminals who rule Chicago, this plan makes it very clear how she feels about Chicago’s crime–she doesn’t really care about it.
Mind you, Chicago is essentially a war zone, based on the rate of death for young men of a certain age. A recent study showed that young military-aged men are more likely to be shot and killed in Chicago than they were likely to be shot and killed in the combat zones of Afghanistan and Iraq. And yet she wants to focus her attention on having victims make themselves less attractive victims.

Where I live overseas, we are advised to keep a stash of money in our house at all times (roughly $200 or so), in case we are robbed. The thinking is that you should always have something to “give” the thieves, because they can become upset (and then possibly violent) if they break in to your house and you have nothing for them to steal. Messed up, yes, I know, but it’s the working theory.
Now, apply that to these street vendors. A criminal comes up to rob them and is told, “I run a cashless business so there’s nothing here for you to steal.” How much do you want to bet that criminal gets angry (or doesn’t believe the vendor) and becomes violent? Seems like Lightfoot’s solution is going to work just exactly as well as every other solution proposed by leftists, which is to say, not at all.
Lightfoot is as much to blame for Chicago’s high crime. She and the rest of the leftists in charge of Chicago enable the criminal activity there. However, if a law-abiding Chicago resident uses a gun to defend herself from the thug attempting to attack her, she’ll face criminal charges. Leftists are never to be trusted.
