I saw this clip circulating yesterday and I knew this would be the perfect place to discuss its contents.
First, let’s look at what exactly Oprah said that has TikTok all stirred up…
From the Daily Wire:
Oprah Winfrey has ignited debate after suggesting a Christmas gift that costs “like a hundred and some dollars,” then appearing surprised when the person to whom she made the suggestion balked at the price.
The 68-year-old former talk show host appeared in a TikTok in which a stranger asks her for a gift idea for his mother, reports Insider.
Winfrey pauses, then suggests “a beautiful red jewelry box.” When the stranger notes that such a gift is “too expensive” for him, the former talk show host responds, “No it’s not. It’s really not. It’s like a hundred and some dollars.”
The questioner presses Winfrey, asking a second time for a gift idea “a little lower in my price budget.” The host appears shocked, saying, “Lower than $100?”
After the video surfaced, some reacted with shock that Winfrey thought $100 should be in a person’s price range, while others noted that for the billionaire, $100 bucks probably wasn’t a lot.
Winfrey followed up her initial suggestion by telling the man to write up a list of the “top ten reasons” he loves his mother, and to give it to her with a “beautiful card.”
It is unclear exactly when the video was taken, as the outlet noted.

I’m gonna come out and say that I’m pretty sure this video is at least a few years old. However, I think it opens up a good conversation for how out of touch celebrities have become.
I didn’t find Oprah to be overly rude in her tone of voice while talking to this guy. Acting like $100 is the unspoken minimum for a gift to be acceptable, though, is probably not the route I would have taken here.
People living in the public eye have slip-of-the-tongue moments all the time. After having hers in this video, Oprah offered a nice “sentimental” option at the man’s request. He seemed to appreciate her suggestion, and the video ends on good terms as far as I can tell…
This video still makes me feel a little off though…
After all, shouldn’t Oprah know better than to insinuate that you’re cheap if you don’t drop $100 on a Christmas present after how hard she had to work to achieve her own successes?
Expanding this beyond Oprah… this is one of the many reasons why no one should take advice, politically or otherwise, from these people without thinking long and hard about it. These Hollywood types have isolated themselves to the point where they’re almost not even real people anymore. We don’t have the same problems, which makes it that much harder to come up with solutions that work for everyone. I’m not holding my breath on that, by the way… I’m just saying…
Some people may think we should cut Oprah some slack and move on with our actual problems (especially if the video is old). I’m not going to disagree with that, but I also think she should know better. She’s been in the business long enough to know that it’s people like this guy, people like you and me, who made her famous. Perhaps actors and actresses would be a little more likeable if they remembered that a little more frequently…
Having a little more humility and respect for others is something we can all afford to invest in.

100 dollars to Oprah is pocket change. To people like me 100 dollars buys a few days worth of groceries. Her head is so far up in the billionaire cloud that she can’t see the ground anymore.
Yes I agree. This proves how out of touch celebrities are.
