Everything is stupid. The Biden administration had been lobbying The Who to change the name of monkeypox in the name of racism. The WHO announced today that they have indeed decided to rename monkeypox to ‘mpox.’ Because it’s apparently now racist to even say the word monkey and there is also literally nothing else going on in the world right now. I feel like I can think of a few more things the Biden admin should have been focused on. But yeah, sure, this was definitely important too.
Monkeypox originated in 1958 when a pox-like disease was found to be spreading through monkeys being used for research in Denmark. It came from monkeys, so naturally it would be called monkeypox. Just like swine flu, which was first found in pigs. If monkeypox is racist, is swine flu fatphobic? Honestly, in this day and age, probably.
The argument for monkeypox being racist is of course due to actual racists referring to black people as monkeys. I literally never would have associated monkeypox with race. I have assumed the name was due to the fact that it was found in monkeys, and after the quickest google search, it was confirmed. Only a racist would automatically bring race into something that literally has nothing to do with race.
Thank goodness the name has been changed. Racism has now been eradicated. Great job, WHO!

It’s not about monkeypox being racist it’s about trying to keep as much power in accusations of racism as they can.
The more uses of the word monkey that aren’t associated with race the less power the accusation of racism has.
