Yesterday, a missile landed in Poland near the Ukrainian border and killed two people. Russia was immediately blamed, and loins were girded for World War III.
Buuuut as it turns out, the missile was actually probably Ukrainian:
“From the information that we and our allies have, it was an S-300 rocket made in the Soviet Union, an old rocket and there is no evidence that it was launched by the Russian side,” Polish President Andrzej Duda said. “It is highly probable that it was fired by Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense.”
Of course, it’s still Russia’s fault, according to NATO.
“This is not Ukraine’s fault. Russia bears ultimate responsibility as it continues its illegal war against Ukraine,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels.
Yeah. . . I guess I’d probably try to shift blame if the country that’s received billions of taxpayer dollars in aid had a missile end up killing people next door, too.
Investigations are ongoing, and Ukraine has been cautious in its response, stating that they will need to take a closer look themselves before coming to any conclusions.
Nevertheless, though WWIII looms ever closer, it is not at our doorsteps yet. Which only means one thing:
Time for memes.

Errr, we haven’t paid for any S-300 missiles. That would’ve been left over stock from when the Soviet Union fell apart and Ukraine became its’ own fully fledged nation. For example, we aren’t going to say we paid for Ukraine’s MiG-29s when they already had them.
