Popular conservative author, talk show host, and podcaster Candace Owens recently told the Daily Mail about what she called the “24 hours of torture” she experienced at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN, where she recently gave birth to her second child.
According to the article, Owens says she “declined antibiotics and contraction-inducing drugs [Pitocin] while going into labor,” explaining that this was just the beginning in a series of events which ultimately “culminated in staffers threatening to call child services.”
She told Daily Mail that she experienced no complications with either birth and said,
“I had been very vocal about not wanting to be loaded up with unnecessary drugs during labor. The doctor wanted me to take antibiotics, and I declined. Because I declined, they wanted me to stay in the hospital for 48 hours – and big coincidence, that’s the maximum amount that insurance will cover.”
This was part of her accusation of hospital staff “engaging in a concerted effort to empty her wallet, by keeping her for over 48 hours so her stay was not covered by insurance.” Owens recounts that when she refused to stay longer, the hospital pediatrician “approached her and her husband as they tried to leave, callously telling the couple ‘that she watched a baby die in the 47th hour because her parents refused to stay.'” Likewise, Owens said that “the hospital’s head nurse warned her that ‘if [she left] before, [she would] be charged with a misdemeanor.'”
Amid hospital staff’s threats, including falsely statements that insurance wouldn’t cover the hospital stay if she left against medical advice, as well as a hospital social worker asking the couple to sign documents acknowledging the fact that the Department of Children’s Services could visit them after leaving the hospital against medical advice, the couple went home with their healthy 7 lb 3 oz baby.
Owens explained to the Daily Mail that one of the reasons they wanted to go home was that they “just wanted to sleep.” Following her refusal to take the drugs and her decision to leave before the 48 hour mark, “that’s when the true torture really began.” She recalls the incessant harassment of what she called “the hospital mafia.”
“One such check-in, Owens said, saw a staffer barge into the commentator’s room as she slept at 4 am, and ‘unclothe’ her sleeping baby ‘to weigh her naked on a cold scale.’
‘That’s what they do,’ Owens chided, adding that she had ‘wanted to leave after 24 hours’ – but was told ‘”you can’t leave until you take this test, until you get the antibiotics.”‘
She went on: ‘As a result, when we asked to leave after 24 hours of torture in the form of relentless knocks – the hospital mafia descended.'”
Owens explained that this hospital experience “has changed her outlook on the American hospital system, which she says she will strive to change using her platform as a political influencer and analyst, and on her new daily program for the Daily Wire, ‘Candace.'”
“We need to start to realize what the medical industry is and what it has become – a wire discussion in the era of Covid. So many parents and woman go through that, not in control of their child, feeling threatened. Doing that show will allow me to continue that discussion.”
I remember the very first time I ever emphatically told a doctor “No.” It was with my 3rd child. Until that point, I had obediently submitted to everything they ordered me to do, generally without giving it a second thought. I’m ashamed of that now. But my 3rd baby was special. The doctors bungled several major aspects of maternal and infant care, and my eyes were opened. So when we went in for a routine well check and the doctor informed me they would be drawing several vials of blood at the appointment, I asked what for. Their answer was a dismissive, “It’s just what we do.” Ok, but why? “Because at this age, we like to do bloodwork just to check that everything is fine.” Ok, but specifically what? “Well, there could be lots of things.” Ok, but are you worried about anything specifically? Are there indications that something might be wrong that you want to double check? “No, he seems perfectly healthy.” Then, no, we won’t be drawing blood for unnecessary and unindicated bloodwork. “But you have to! That’s what we do!” One nurse was so disgusted with me and said I’d regret it if my son ended up being anemic and I didn’t know because I didn’t get this bloodwork. I asked if anything led her to believe that my son might have anemia and she conceded that no, there were no indications whatsoever. They were so angry and I was TERRIFIED that they were going to call CPS on me for refusing this bloodwork. That would not be the last time I was terrified the doctors would call the police or CPS on me for choosing not to do what they wanted me to do. It’s a terrible way to live as a mother.
Owens believes that “the doctors’ and nurses’ repeated assertions that they ‘know what is best for our children,’ as well as their veiled threats that if ‘you leave against medical advice, insurance might not cover stay’ and that ‘they can also send CPS to your house'” are unconstitutional and “criminal.”
“In the post Covid era, parents are apprehensive about how much control we have ceded to the state.
These are the discussions we need to have – the burden will be on the children. People shouldn’t have to be scared CPS will take their newborn kids away.
It’s a peer pressure campaign,’ Owens said. ‘You’re no longer able to make a decision about your child, about yourself.
I have been terrified of condescending doctors who didn’t appreciate my decisions regarding my children. I’ve been directly threatened. I’ve been directly lied to. I’ve been ignored, manipulated, and denigrated in numerous medical settings. I empathize with Owens and the millions of other mothers who have been pressured into medical decisions regarding their children which make them uncomfortable or which they later regret. I empathize with mothers who perpetually fear angering an authoritarian medical system. I’m grateful Candace Owens is speaking up and speaking out, and willing to use her platform to effect change in our medical system. For all you mothers who have felt belittled, denigrated, or strong-armed, know you are not alone and you are your child’s best advocate. And for all the medical professionals who I know work hard every day to give quality care to the patients for whom they care deeply, please know how grateful we are for your impact on your profession.

Congratulations on your new daughter, Candace! I’m so sorry about all the hell the hospital put you through. If you were undergoing an abortion, you would have been treated like a queen. It’s been 35 years, but after my daughter was born, a fool nurse put her in my left arm with an IV running in it. A witchy nurse screamed at me to keep my arm straight. Why the hell wasn’t the baby put in my right arm. Afterwards, my daughter’s father overheard some hospital staff members say, (in so many words) that our baby should be taken away from us. Hospitals have become frightening places nowadays.
Precisely why I never leave my children alone with a doctor or nurse, either. While they’re young I go with to everything and question everything – partly to protect them, and partly to teach them. Also, always ask questions. Over time you learn the language. When you begin to understand and can speak back to them, they take you far more seriously.
If your nurse or doctor won’t explain things, find a different provider.
I’ve also had threats against me using my child as the excuse. I told them to do it, make the call. When everything turns out fine, their eyes will turn to the one who called it in and they’ll want to know exactly why. Won’t that be an interesting series of questions to answer?
Never back down from a bully – punch them square in the nose.
These days people enter the field of medicine for inflated compensation. It used to be that people entered because they wanted to help and heal those afflicted. The old-time doctors explained options, recommended a course of treatment and honored your wishes. The young doctors of today are not to be trusted if you are approaching 70. I can’t speak to pregnancies but have seen the same things related here in other situations. The CPS is even worse. There was a situation where a child had bruises and a well-intentioned neighbor reported to CPS. The social worker was a bra burning lesbian and the parents belonged to a fundamentalist faith. She decided that she hated the father. She illegally took the child and want to a pediatrician. The dr said let’s take a blood test to see what it may be. Social worker says thanks but no thanks and went to dr number 2 with the same result. Went to dr number 3 who said abuse. Social worker says great, let’s go to court. Things went downhill from there. Eleven months later the bruises still appeared, and the foster family took the child to a pediatrician who after a blood test found that the child had a rare blood disease that caused her to bruise if you looked at her hard. The parents went through hell, but the state settled out of court. I hope that they bagged the doctor as well. The mom was pregnant, and CPS took the baby after birth and would not allow the mother to breast feed or send her milk to her baby. We have many problems, and this is one of them.
