My head hurts…
A high school in Denver, Colorado has been sowing the seeds of mistrust between young people and the police (using your tax dollars to do so, of course).
According to The College Fix:
A high school in Denver, Colorado is under fire for showing students a video telling them not to contact the police if they witness a “violently racist or homophobic” incident.
The rationale is that cops will “escalate, rather than reduce” the violence, the New York Post reports.
Originally posted to YouTube in 2017 by the Barnard Center for Research on Women, the “Don’t be a Bystander: 6 Tips for Responding to Racist Attacks” YouTube vid says that given the current political environment, “White supremacists and White nationalists have been emboldened, and as a result, public attacks are on the rise.”
“Because police have been trained to see people of color, gender-nonconforming folks, and Muslims as criminals,” the video warns, “they often treat victims as perpetrators of violence. So, if the victim hasn’t asked you to call the police, do not — I repeat, do not — call the police.”
A spokesperson for the Denver Public Schools said the video was selected for its title and was not “fully vetted” before being shown: “While some communities of color report that they are over-policed and disproportionately impacted by the presence of law enforcement, nonetheless, there are some narratives in this video that we do not subscribe to in DPS.”
Denver South “believes students should contact the police if they witness a violent incident,” the spokesperson added.
The Denver Police Foundation said in a statement that the various “tips” made in the presentation were “reprehensible,” “irresponsible” and are “not only a blatant misrepresentation of the training received by the Denver Police Department and law enforcement as a whole, but […] also encourage anti police attitudes.”
It’s your lucky day if you live in a major city. They probably wouldn’t come even if you did call…
Is DPS sorry for showing the video, or just sorry that they got caught? You don’t play a video in class if you have no idea what’s in it. That’s literally step one… watch the video.
I don’t find this surprising, just disappointing. This is becoming a habit I’d like to quit, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
The bridge between law enforcement and their respective communities has been burned so many times in recent years that it’s virtually nonexistent. Citizens don’t trust cops because of horrible incidents that the media then uses for political purposes. Cops, in turn, are hyperalert, and are reluctant to actually do their jobs because of how easily things can spiral out of control.
I’m not saying that there are no bad cops. Every profession has people that absolutely suck at their jobs. If officers are committing criminally hateful acts while hiding behind the badge, then they should face the legal consequences of their actions. Any cop with a conscience would agree with that.
Hate and evil walk among us every day, but to accuse an entire profession of embodying these characteristics because they choose to dedicate their lives in service to their communities is despicable.
There’s a growing number of people who believe that we would be better off with no cops at all. If we keep villainizing the profession, then these people might just get their wish…
I’ll leave you with the video itself:

A very good friend who was an air traffic controller who got fired for striking became a police officer. He got brainwashed in college about crime and punishment. After being a patrol officer that changed. I was visiting with him and his wife. I invited him to go out for a beer. He said that he didn’t drink anymore. When I asked him why he told me that 90% or more of the bad sheet he had to deal with involved alcohol and if that was what it did to people, he didn’t want any part of it. He also shared that most of the violent calls he responded to involved minorities and that they were more likely to resist arrest and fight the cops.
As a teacher myself, I can say with great confidence that “Was not fully vetted” is EducationSpeak for “Crap! We got caught showing something we wholeheartedly believe in but which we have to pretend not to believe in because normal people who are not woke morons believe it is reprehensible.”
As you say, LT, the first rule of showing a video (or ANYTHING) in class is “Watch the whole video so you know what is in it.”
“White supremacists and White nationalists have been emboldened, and as a result, public attacks are on the rise.”
So we’ve gone from 0 to 1? Sadly in reality most attacks with racial discrepancies emanate from the black community which is also in line with their generally disproportionate rate of violent crime to begin with. Creating a boogie man to justify their actions is only going to cause more problems.
“Because police have been trained to see people of color, gender-nonconforming folks, and Muslims as criminals”
Projection at it’s finest. Police aren’t trained to differentiate between demographics but these folks are as well as to view them as victims even when they are engaging in criminal activities.
“they often treat victims as perpetrators of violence”
The only time this has been consistently proven is when a woman is beating up on a man.
Okay woman, if, Heaven forbid, you were to get gang raped by black thugs, DON’T. CALL. THE. COPS! It could be “oppressive” to the “brothas” if you do; never mind that you were violated. Today’s government schools teach students WHAT to think instead of HOW to think and the lack of vetting in selecting this video is proof.
