In a big step in the right direction, Texas state legislature approved an additional $20 million to fund the state’s Alternatives to Abortion program, bringing the total to $100 million to be spent on mothers and babies. According to the Texas Health and Human Services, the Alternatives to Abortion program, which served more than 100,000 women during fiscal year 2020, provides funding for:
– Counseling, mentoring, educational information and classes on pregnancy, parenting, adoption, life skills and employment readiness.
– Material assistance, such as car seats, clothing, diapers and formula.
– Care coordination through referrals to government assistance programs and other social services programs.
– Call center for information and appointment scheduling.
– Housing and support services through maternity homes.
There are about to be a lot of babies born to mothers who, tragically, don’t want them, can’t support them, or don’t know how to take care of them, and they need our support. The Texas Alternatives to Abortions program is intended to:
– Reduce abortions and improve pregnancy outcomes by helping women practice sound health-related behaviors and improve prenatal nutrition.
– Improve child health and development by helping parents provide responsible and competent care for their children.
– Improve families’ economic self-sufficiency by helping parents continue their education and find a job.
And it’s not just for new mothers. It’s maternity care. It’s for new fathers. It’s for parents who lose a child or miscarry. It’s for adoptive parents. In the face of accusations that conservatives are only pro-birth and not pro-life, programs like Alternatives to Abortion show that conservatives value the life they have fought to save. And promoting school choice, which provides children the greatest educational opportunities through their developmental years, is further evidence of that fact. That’s why conservatives are working to fund students, not systems, and to protect those students from radical indoctrination. This is what’s next.

This is a wonderful program. I wish every state would do this instead of keeping abortions legal.
