If you attend Point Park University in Pennsylvania, using the wrong pronouns could now land you in some serious trouble.
According to Fox News:
A university in Pennsylvania told students that “action could be taken” against them if they do not respect their classmates’ preferred pronouns.
Point Park University’s Office of Equity and Inclusion notified incoming students of its “Misgendering, Pronoun Misuse, and Deadnaming Policy” in an email first obtained by Campus Reform.
It stated that “any individual who has been informed of another person’s gender identity, pronouns, or chosen name is expected to respect that individual.”
It said “action could be taken” if a complaint is filed regarding the policy.
“While the University recognizes the aspect of intent versus impact, we must recognize that regardless of the intent, if an individual is impacted in a harmful way, action could be taken if a complaint is filed,” the email states.
I understand that we need to respect others. That’s how I was raised. However, from my collegiate experience, you’re lucky if you get a grunt of acknowledgement from 98% of your peers, nevermind an actual conversation where this would even be brought up. Most of them are sleeping, or eating, or they have their earbuds turned up so loud that you can hear their music if you’re sitting three rows in front of them during a lecture. When you take all of these elements, and then add in Covid, it creates the perfect storm of sludge. That is, of course, if we’re talking about time spent in classes, or doing group-projects. If this isn’t happening on-campus for certain extra-curricular activities or in class, then I don’t see where it’s the role of your school to punish you for it.
Technically, I really don’t see why your school should be able to punish you for hurting someone’s feelings at all, but here we are.
What we really need to be focusing on is teaching these “young adults” how to hold a conversation. And how to spell. And how to do math. And real, offensive history.
We have our priorities backwards again. Knowing someone’s pronouns will get you nowhere in life. Being able to send an email without text-slang will, but no one seems overly concerned with things that really matter anymore. It’s become all about what certain things make us feel inside. It’s tiring.
The Fox News article went on to talk about a conservative college student who doesn’t agree with being punished for using the wrong pronouns:
Not everyone is on board with the school’s policy. Logan Dubil, Campus Reform Correspondent and a student at PPU told Fox News the school’s policies, “go against many students’ belief systems, especially conservative students.”
“Personally, I believe in the science. There are two sexes and two genders: male and female,” Dubil said. “The policies in question force me to go against my beliefs. The fact that I can be disciplined by failing to follow policies that violate my conscience is concerning.”
It only matters what someone feels if you have a certain belief system. That’s how the world works now. Great.
