Democratic House members are bitter about their loses on Election Day. Republicans gained so many seats in the House that Democrats feel bamboozled by their leadership. Several moderates and centrists are endorsing Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to replace Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House.
The Hill reports “Americans are clearly afraid of ‘socialism,’ want safe streets and neighborhoods and to vote for people who they believe will help put more money in their pockets.”
Cue the jaw drop. I did not see that coming! Obviously, it’s all true; Americans are afraid of socialism and want safe street and neighborhoods, I just didn’t think any of the Democrats were paying attention.
A spokesperson for Jeffries says he has no interest in the promotion, he’s instead focusing on maintaining his current position, still it shows dissension in the ranks.
The Republicans performed better than anyone really expected. It was a pleasant surprise. Nevertheless, I didn’t expect the Democrats to turn on each other while the ballots were still fresh off a midnight delivery in a suitcase (that’s just a voter fraud joke, don’t censor me!).
Perhaps Democrats are waking up to the idea that moderate, centrist politicians might be more representative of their constituents?
Pelosi has raised nearly $1 billion for her party in the 20 years, so I doubt they’re going to just run her off after losing a few seats. Still, it’s telling that the Democrats were so shocked and upset by the absent blue wave that they’re open to change. It’s almost like they believed their own polls.
