September 2, 2020Do you remember earlier this year when Amy Cooper, a white woman, called the police on Christian Cooper, a black man? I covered this incident, which gained national attention, back in May. It feels like ages ago. It’s been a LONG SUMMER, am I right?

Ms. Cooper was skewered for emphasizing the man’s race. Mr. Cooper, for his part, also acted badly by making subtle threats to Ms. Cooper’s dog. In any case, what should have been a small dispute blew up into a huge issue.
Well, now the state of New Jersey has passed new legislation in response to this incident. What’s that popular saying? Legislators gonna legislate. Well, unless you live in Indiana where Governor Holcomb refuses to call them into session so he can rule by fiat, indefinitely, under emergency powers. But I digress.
New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed a law Monday making it a crime to call 911 for the purpose of intimidating someone because of race, ethnicity, religion or gender.
The law amends an existing law and makes it a crime to falsely incriminate someone else or file a false police report as a form of bias intimidation, according to a statement on the governor’s website. The bill also makes it illegal to call 911 with the purpose of harassing someone based on race or other protected class.
“Using the threat of a 9-1-1 call or police report as an intimidation tactic against people of color is an unacceptable, abhorrent form of discrimination,” Murphy said in the statement.
Violators of this new law risk up to five years in prison and a $15,000 fine.
File this new law in the Totally Unnecessary Laws bin. It is already a crime to file a false police report. This law could, unfortunately, make white Americans scared to call police on a person of color for fear of charges of racism and five years of hard time.
Ms. Cooper has already been publicly condemned and humiliated, lost her high-paying job, and charged with a misdemeanor for filing a false police report.
The legislators of New Jersey need to work on legislation for more pressing issues that affect the people of New Jersey. This isolated incident was already addressed and done and over with.
