Hi, my name is Rachel, and I love the electoral college.
Surprised? You shouldn’t be. Just like you shouldn’t be surprised that AOC wants to get rid of it. I mean, I’m sure we all expected some sort of push from Ocasio-Cortez to have it abolished and we all knew her justification would be nonsensical. But somehow she managed to make it about, you guessed it, race.
“The Electoral College has a racial injustice breakdown,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Due to severe racial disparities in certain states, the Electoral College effectively weighs white voters over voters of color, as opposed to a ‘one person, one vote’ system where all our votes are counted equally.”
Wowzers. For someone who supposedly studied political science, she has no freaking clue about the electoral college– why it exists, what it does, how it works, why it’s important. Honestly, if it came out that she thinks it’s made up of actual universities, I wouldn’t bat an eye.
Could you image if we had this kind democracy-altering ‘fairness’ provision for literally any other group?” the congresswoman asked. “If we weighed, for example, black and indigenous voters more because of unfairness?”
Except that’s not the same thing at all. Race is not a determining factor in someone’s political beliefs or needs from their government. You know what is? YOUR ENVIRONMENT. The place you live. The work you do. The resources you have. The ones you lack. You numpty.
Elizabeth Harrington summed it up perfectly:
Ocasio-Cortez (and many 2020 Dem candidates) think it's a "scam" to allow anyone but coastal elites have a say in our electionshttps://t.co/13w0Uyxjh5

Because that’s what it boils down to. Giant cities want, need, and believe in different things heavily influenced by the fact that they’re giant cities. Why should they get to decide what Delawareans need? Or Nebraskans? Or Hawaiians?
TRICK QUESTION. They shouldn’t.
I generally try to avoid generalizations, but straight up, if you think the electoral college needs to be abolished you need to pull your head out of your butt. I’m talking to you, AOC.
