I stayed unplugged from news for much of yesterday, and awoke this morning to texts from Daisy telling me about the shootings that took place in El Paso and Dayton. I think I can safely speak for every decent, normal American when I say I am just heartbroken and completely sick of this sh*t.
I’ve now read the manifesto of the TX shooter (who is in custody), and regardless of his claims at the end of it, of COURSE he’s a white supremacist lunatic. That’s not fake news. That’s just reality. The guy is mental. There’s no doubt that the Dayton killer (now dead) is a lunatic too. Normal people don’t go on killing sprees.
Naturally, as is the case with any senseless shooting like these, politicians cannot WAIT to politicize them. And Robert O’Rourke went ALL THE WAY THERE, you guys, blaming Trump for the El Paso shooting. Behold what he said to MSNBC:
“We’ve had a rise in hate crimes every single one of the last three years during an administration where you have a president who’s called Mexican rapists and criminals. Though Mexicans commit crimes at far lower rates than those born in this country, he has tried to make us afraid of them to some real effect and consequence. Attempting to ban all Muslims from this one the day he signed the executive order, the mosque in Victoria, TX was burned to the ground. Those chants that we heard in Greenville, NC — ‘Send her back,’ talking about our fellow American citizens, duly elected to represent their constituents in the Congress, who happen to be women of color. He is a racist, and he stokes racism in this country. And it does not just offend our sensibilities, it fundamentally changes the character of this country, and it leads to violence. And again, there are still details that we are waiting on, but I’m just following the lead that I’ve heard from the El Paso Police Department where they say there are strong indications that this shooter wrote that manifesto and this was inspired by his hatred of people here in this community.”
What’s amazing about this entire diatribe is the lack of self-awareness it demonstrates. Continuously calling Trump a racist is a perfect example of stoking racism in our country, particularly given that based on Trump’s achieved results for the black community during his presidency, he is the WORST RACIST EVER.
Never mind the fact that the rhetoric from the Left (AOC’s concentration camps, Maxine’s encouragement of people to attack GOPers in public spaces, and on and on and on) is horrific and yet constantly excused. Nope – a crazy person in El Paso is Trump’s fault.
Look – I don’t blame AOC for the Colorado detention center firebombing. No one is responsible for that except the insane person who committed the act. And the same is true about the El Paso shooter.
Both sides of the political spectrum right now are as riled up as I’ve ever seen them, and tensions are at an all time high. But people who act out in violent ways are beyond riled up and tense – they’re sick. And what would be great, in times like these, is if politicians remembered who to place the blame on, instead of stoking even more rage.
I’m gonna go pray for the victims’ families and watch some cute puppy videos now.
