Dozens of people were shot today near the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas. It sounds like there was an active shooter with an assault rifle in a nearby Walmart as well as the mall. Nearly two dozen people were killed and at least 20 more were wounded. One person is in custody.
This is absolutely tragic.
We as a society need to figure out where we have gone wrong, that so many people find it necessary to commit these senseless and horrific acts of violence upon others.
I think the problem is complicated, multifaceted, and has very little to do with gun control.
But that’s not what I want to focus on today. Today, I want to highlight one of the hero actors during the tragedy:
This is Glen Oakley.
He was in the Foot Locker when the El Paso shooting happened. When he ran to leave, he saw kids in the mall without their parents, scared and alone.
So he picked up as many as he could and carried them to safety

Glen Oakley sounds like a stand-up guy. He did what he could to protect those around him, from drawing his own gun to carrying frightened children to safety. And when he reached the cops, he explained what he was doing and handed over his gun, instead of doing something to further escalate a tense situation.
Afterwards, Glen tweeted his support for arming yourself:
These are the people we should be talking about after tragic mass shootings. Not the creeps hurting innocent bystanders for their 15 minutes – but bystanders like Glen, who see a desperate situation and rise to meet it.
