Disney’s CEO Bob Iger is jumping into the political fray and threatening to pull the company’s operations in Georgia if the fetal heartbeat bill goes into effect.
During the first week of May, Georgia’s Gov. Brian Kemp signed a bill which essentially prohibits abortion after a fetal heartbeat, which is a common sign of life, is detected.
“Georgia is a state that values life,” Kemp said during the signing of the bill. “We protect the innocent, we champion the vulnerable, we stand up and speak for those that are unable to speak for themselves.”
The law doesn’t go into effect until 2020. Pro-abortion organizations, such as the Center for Reproductive Rights, are hoping to challenge the law and essentially “abort” it before it comes to fruition. Kemp acknowledged that the bill would likely face legal challenges.
Meanwhile, celebrities like Alyssa Milano are calling for boycotts. Netflix has already said that it’s going to think twice about filming in Georgia, and it sounds like Disney is following suit. Iger said it would be “very difficult” to film in Georgia if the pro-life law becomes a reality. He said many people who work for the company won’t want to work there because of it.
“I think many people who work for us will not want to work there, and we will have to heed their wishes in that regard,” he said, according to Reuters. “Right now we are watching it very carefully.”
“I don’t see how it’s practical for us to continue to shoot there,” he added.
This is certainly something to keep an eye on.
