Poll: Nearly 1/3 Of Black Female Voters Have Favorable Or Neutral Opinion Of Trump

In recent history, Republican candidates running for POTUS struggle to win over the African American vote. President Trump lost the black vote to Hillary Clinton by a sizable margin. Hillary swept 89% of the African American vote, while Trump garnered a mere 8%.

According to exit polls, the GOP lost by a similar margin in the 2018 midterms as well– 90% to 9%.

While some of this could be attributed the progressive narrative that Trump and his supporters are flaming white supremacists, this has been an undeniable problem, even before Trump took the presidency.

But is the tide turning?

According to a new survey, African American women might be having a change of heart when it comes to Trump.

VoterLabs spoke to over 600 African American women who were “likely” to vote in the upcoming elections, and nearly one-third (29%) had a favorable or neutral opinion on President Trump.

“Of those polled 16% responded that they ‘really like him’ or ‘he’s okay,’ with an additional almost 13% unsure or undecided, a much different picture than the one portrayed in most media,” the survey concluded.

“Trump’s numbers with black Democratic women show that his populist message still resonates with many,” said Walter Kawecki, the founder and CEO of VoterLabs. “Given that [Bernie] Sanders also has a heavily populist message, and is currently enjoying strong support in this community, Trump’s numbers shouldn’t be that surprising.

“It’s also important to remember that Hillary Clinton badly underperformed with this group in 2016,” he said. “Turnout among black Democratic women dropped from around 68% in 2008 and 70% in 2012, to about 64% in 2016.”

As usual, 2020 will likely come down to voter turnout. However, it should be noted that the black unemployment rate has seen historic lows under Trump’s presidency.
