April 16, 2019There’s a glimmer of hope when it comes to the Notre Dame fire. The damage isn’t as bad as most initially thought. Yes- the spire collapsed, and two-thirds of the roof is destroyed, but the church is still “structurally sound.”
The Notre-Dame cathedral remains structurally sound after the monstrous fire that roared through it Monday night. But the conflagration that destroyed the wood-and-lead roof and lacy spire also left three “holes” in the sweeping vaulted ceiling, officials said after an inspection on Tuesday.
They are still considering the fire an “accident,” but there are many skeptics out there. I can’t say I blame them for remaining skeptical. We’re talking about a structure that’s been standing for hundreds of years. You’re really meaning to tell me that the individuals renovating it were THAT careless? I know accidents happen. I’m not saying there’s something more sinister at play, but I’m also not ruling it out.
However, at this point, officials are treating it as an accident.
“Nothing at this stage suggests a voluntary act,” Paris prosecutor Rémy Heitz said.

Amazing, right? The photo is hitting so many people right in the feels.
It’s a relief that the church is still structurally sound. That photo is haunting, but I think it also serves as a sign of hope.
