We’re about one week into the partial government shutdown, and it looks like it’s going to carry over into the new year.
The Senate went into session for a whopping 4 minutes Thursday and won’t be back until next week. The House gaveled into session for 3 1/2 minutes. It’s basically out until next week too.
The Senate and House will both be in session Monday for a pro forma meeting but no business or votes are expected to be conducted in yet another sign the shutdown will drag on.
So they’re going to meet and pretend to do stuff but not actually get anything accomplished. Sounds about right.
Both chambers have promised lawmakers at least 24 hours notice before any votes are to be held in order to give them time to get to the Capitol.
While the House was in session Thursday afternoon, Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern tried to bring up a bill to reopen the government. He shouted to try to be recognized but Republican Rep. Luke Messer – who was presiding over the chamber – ignored him and gaveled the House out of session.
McGovern told reporters afterward there was an agreement to fund the government in place last week: ‘Until the president, you know, went off his meds, and who the hell knows what happened.’
Unless his proposal involves the proper funding for the construction of a wall on the border, kindly shut up. It’s nice to see that Democratic lawmakers associate demanding a secure border to a psycho forgetting to take his medication, though.
The Senate isn’t returning to session until 4 pm on Wednesday and – with 24 hours notice promised for votes – negotiators would have to come up with a deal over the new year holiday.
I highly doubt that will happen.
Don’t forget– Democrats take control of the House next month. In other words, this isn’t going to get any easier.
