As you guys know, Megyn Kelly lost her job on NBC after making a controversial remark about blackface. I TOTALLY get what she was TRYING to say. She wasn’t referring to ACTUAL BLACKFACE in its terrible, offensive historical context. She was talking about dressing up as a character who happens to be a different ethnicity than you on Halloween.
BIG difference.
Perhaps her remark came off as ignorant, but I don’t think she should’ve lost her job over it. It’s clear NBC was looking for a reason to get rid of her, and that was the perfect time to make the move.
Now. For those who forgot, the “Today” show’s morning crew usually dresses up for Halloween. This was the situation last year:

Ben Shapiro has some questions.
You didn’t need a DeLorean to denounce whiteface when you were next to it…last year, @alroker (that’s Hoda as Blake Shelton, btw) pic.twitter.com/MnsrUpoLzu

What exactly is NBC’s policy on this stuff in general, anyway? Just out of curiosity? Since apparently @megynkelly gets fired for making an ignorant comment about non-blackface for which she apologized? https://t.co/e59ONkqdvg

And as @CalebHowe points out, Lester Holt has a rather weird history of dressing up as white people, complete with skin coloring makeup. NBC’s got some weird policies. https://t.co/3TLZLzZ7cI

For real. Lester Holt dressed up as Susan Boyle.

Why was that OK?
Somebody get Ben a new TV since he can’t see that Hoda is doing her best Blake Shelton WITHOUT whiteface. https://t.co/Wc20UC2vJa

OK Al, but answer the question. What about Lester?
Yes, because there is no history of degradation, humiliation and racial bigotry associated with it. What part of that don’t you get? https://t.co/78jUq8G2x7

Oh. So black people can dress up as white people they admire (although I doubt Lester dressed up as Susan Boyle because he “admires” her, let’s be honest) and it’s totes OK, but white people CANNOT dress up as black people they admire, because it’s racist.
Thank you for clarifying, Al.
