I can’t believe this requires stating out loud, but I feel compelled to provide this public service announcement and let everyone know that eating squirrel brains isn’t a good idea.
According to the sourcelink, a 61-year old dude in New York died a couple years ago after eating squirrel brains. This dude developed a degenerative disease called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), which can be contracted by coming into contact with infected or contaminated meat. He was having trouble thinking, couldn’t walk, and was “losing touch with reality.”
The disease is similar to mad cow disease, and the study of this particular dude’s death and the circumstances surrounding it were reported last week during a conference of infectious disease specialists.
Anyway, CJD causes rapid mental deterioration, within just a few months, and 70% of the people who have it die within a year. There’s no treatment or cure. It just kills you. And you don’t even KNOW you have it because the test for it can only be confirmed by testing your brain tissue during an autopsy.
So in other words, don’t eat squirrel brains.
You’re welcome.
Incidentally, Daisy and I have been on a mini-vacation over the past four days, so that’s why you haven’t heard from us much lately. She was in AZ getting her step-daughter hitched, and I was in AZ visiting my sister. And a post about not eating squirrel brains was the best way I could think of to eeeeeeeease back into work.
