It’s Official: A Third Gender Option Will Be Added To New York City Birth Certificates

A few months ago, we told you about how New York was “proposing to offer a ‘non-binary gender option, designated as ‘X,’ to appear on NYC birth certificates.'”

It’s happening.

The New York City Council and Board of Health passed legislation that will implement a new non-binary identity category known as ‘X’ beginning January 1, 2019.

‘Cause you know. Sometimes people identify as neither male nor female. You really need to be mindful of babies, too. You really need to wait it out and see what they decide. Biology be damned. Doctor’s notes be damned too. NO NEED!

The proposal passed with flying colors– 41-6. Bill De Blasio is totally going to sign it.

“Today is a historic day for New York in its role as a worldwide champion for inclusivity and equality,” City Council Speaker Corey Johnson told NBC News. “I especially want to thank the LGBTQ community for their advocacy and work on this issue to keep New York City in its rightful place as a leader in human rights.”
