I Need To Rant About Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez And Her Brand Of Socialism For A Second

The left is currently trying to sell us socialism in a different form: Gone are the days of curmudgeons like Bernie Sanders! They need bright, shiny, new and YOUNG. They need Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She’ll make socialism COOL!

Just so you know, she’s a member of the Democratic Socialists Of America, which “reject[s] an economic order based on private profit.”

I can’t get over the sheer stupidity of that statement.

They hate private profit, which is basically what the world spins on. Adam Smith had this all figured out back in the 1700s.

“It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest,” he wrote. “We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages.”

Modern day translation: Business owners don’t take huge risks just to be nice to you. Boutique owners aren’t putting in 50-hour weeks just because they want you to have nice clothes. Restaurant owners aren’t hiring employees and perfecting their menus because they’re worried about your dietary habits. They wouldn’t do ANY of that if there wasn’t something in it for them. It’s called PROFIT. It’s not a hobby. It’s a living. Because of that, it IS in their self-interest to make your experience as best as possible, so you’ll come back. In turn, you get GREAT SERVICE. See? This is how self-interest works. We’ve made “self-interest” out to be a dirty term, but it shouldn’t be. It isn’t inherently evil. It’s mutually beneficial and makes the world turn.

We’re all motivated by self-interest. Would you go to work every day and do a great job for absolutely nothing?

Exactly. That doesn’t make you evil. It makes you HUMAN. It’s how we’re built. Self-interest motivates us. Socialism fails, because it attempts to dismiss that fundamental part of our human nature and replace it with virtue-signaling nonsense.

I’m sorry. If you try to tell me that you’d be HAPPY working for “free,” as long as your necessities are covered, you’re a bloody liar. It’s not in our nature. We’re not built that way. God created us in His image, which means, in part, that we’re creative beings. Socialism stifles creativity and innovation.

I always compare socialism to a church potluck. It’s actually how I had my “wow, socialism really DOES suck” epiphany” in high school.

I absolutely LOVED baking and making new dips and treats for church potlucks. Heck– my entire family loved it. My dad would make his famous New England beans, my mom would make her addictive chili grape jelly meatballs (they are DELICIOUS, trust me) and I would slap some dips together and go nuts on dessert. Sometimes, we’d do Oreo truffles. Other times, it’d be a smorgasbord of cookies. It was fun, knowing that everyone would enjoy the food we’d bring, and I was always excited to try the food OTHERS made too.

Except…that’s not how it worked. I remember one particular potluck we did. We had a lot of millennial hipsters at the church at the time, and they came and ate ALL THE AMAZING HOT FOOD, and everyone who cooked got…well, the leftovers, which was basically nothing. I know what you’re thinking. Surely, the others brought food, right?

If tangerines and an uncut pineapple count as bringing something, then sure.

That happened more than once. It was becoming a normal thing, and because of that, I totally lost motivation to go all out for potlucks. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE cooking for people, but it got SO ANNOYING, watching people who consistently didn’t contribute hose me and the others who cooked ACTUAL FOOD AND NOT STUPID FRUIT.

So I stopped, and slowly, potlucks stopped.

I haven’t been to a potluck in over a year. Why? BECAUSE POTLUCK SOCIALISM. It killed it.

Put that on a bigger scale, and bam. That’s why socialism doesn’t work. Where’s our motivation to innovate, create and work hard if it goes to other people and you get NOTHING in return?

Socialism crushes the human spirit.

The DSA says they are socialists because they “share a vision of a humane social order based on popular control of resources and production, economic planning, equitable distribution, feminism, racial equality and non-oppressive relationships.”

“Popular control of resources” is code for “the government is your daddy.”

“Equitable distribution” is code for “you work hard so others don’t have to.”

“Non-oppressive relationships” is code for “bye big companies, hello big government.”

Socialism is contrary to human nature. Don’t be fooled. I don’t care how they’re trying to present it. Ocasio-Cortez’s new “fresh” face does nothing for me. It doesn’t change a thing. You can stick a festive candle in a pile of dog crap, but that doesn’t make it a birthday cake. It’s still sh*t.
