Man, socialism is EXPENSIVE!
As you know, Bernie Sanders has touted a “Medicare For All” plan. AKA, a single-payer health care system. That’s his goal. The government in control of your health care. The government deciding if it’s REALLY worth you getting that procedure. The government deciding who your doctor should be.
Sounds great! //intense sarc.
By the way, Elizabeth Warren is all in. She wrote on her website, “Health care is a basic human right – and it’s time to fight for it. Please join me in signing on as a citizen co-sponsor of Medicare for All.”
I’m cosponsoring @BernieSanders‘ #MedicareforAll bill so we can give everyone access to high quality health care. https://t.co/OUc79zPPVl

Thank you @elizabethforma. The momentum is on our side. Let’s make health care a right. pic.twitter.com/r7BxbFi7cs

Gag.
Well folks. The Mercatus Center at George Mason University did an in-depth analysis on his bright idea, and the results aren’t pretty. According to the study, Bernie’s “Medicare For All” plan would cost an estimated $32.6 trillion over 10 years.
TRILLION. 32.6 of those.
The latest plan from the Vermont independent would require historic tax increases as government replaces what employers and consumers now pay for health care, according to the analysis being released Monday by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University in Virginia. It would deliver significant savings on administration and drug costs, but increased demand for care would drive up spending, the analysis found.
Sanders’ plan builds on Medicare, the popular insurance program for seniors. All U.S. residents would be covered with no copays and deductibles for medical services. The insurance industry would be relegated to a minor role.
“Enacting something like ‘Medicare for all’ would be a transformative change in the size of the federal government,” said Charles Blahous, the study’s author.
Bernie Sanders, of course, rejects the study’s findings and yelled at the Koch brothers.
“If every major country on earth can guarantee health care to all, and achieve better health outcomes, while spending substantially less per capita than we do, it is absurd for anyone to suggest that the United States cannot do the same,” he said in a statement. “This grossly misleading and biased report is the Koch brothers response to the growing support in our country for a ‘Medicare for all’ program.”
I should also note that Sanders’ office has yet to do a study of its own. But gosh darn it, this analysis is wrong, because, well, there’s the feeling.
As the AP notes, this particular estimation isn’t an outlier. It’s actually fairly consistent with other studies.
The Mercatus analysis estimated the 10-year cost of “Medicare for all” from 2022 to 2031, after an initial phase-in. Its findings are similar to those of several independent studies of Sanders’ 2016 plan. Those studies found increases in federal spending over 10 years that ranged from $24.7 trillion to $34.7 trillion.
It begs the ultimate question: Who’s going to pay for this, Bernie? And don’t say “we’re going to tax the rich!” because even that wouldn’t cut the mustard.
The combined net worth of all US billionaires is $2.7 trillion.
That means if you were to tax billionaires at 100% AND send in agents to forcibly seize and liquidate all their property assets, you couldn’t even fund it for one year. https://t.co/HzkvQAEf2D
