Congressional candidate Katie Arrington, who beat Mark Sanford a few weeks ago in the Republican primary race for South Carolina’s District One Congressional seat, has been “seriously” injured in a fatal car accident.
According to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a two-car collision around 9:00 p.m. in the 7400 block of Highway 17 southbound in Adams Run.
Department spokesman Capt. Roger Antonio says Arrington was a passenger in a car struck by a driver traveling the wrong direction. Arrington and the woman she was with, Jacquelin Goff, were both transported to MUSC with serious injuries. There were no other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The driver of the other vehicle died at the scene.
Arrington’s spokesperson said she (Arrington) came out of surgery Saturday morning and was alert and talking, which is obviously a good sign. But again– we’re talking serious injuries– injuries which will require a lot more treatment.
Arrington’s campaign manager, Michael Mule, tells News 2 that Arrington got out of surgery early Saturday morning, and remains at the hospital with her husband. He says Arrington sustained a fracture to her back and several broken ribs. She also has injuries which required a major surgery to remove a portion of her small intestine and potion of her colon. The main artery in her legs has a partial collapse and will require a stint. Mule says additional surgeries will be required, including another one likely on Saturday. Arrington is expected to be hospitalized for the next two weeks.
According to Mule, Arrington was on her way to Hilton Head, where she was supposed to receive an award on Saturday.
Here’s the full thread from her campaign:
