Candace Cameron Bure recently appeared on “Fox & Friends” to promote her new book, “Kind is the New Classy.” She basically says that we can counter the negative culture by doing something really simple: Be kind.
That’s right. Count to 10 and be kind.
“Let’s change the culture by changing ourselves,” she said, saying that media today presents a lot of negativity.
“It starts with you, and you have a choice to be positive, to be kind, to be respectful no matter what people you encounter in your day,” Bure said.
I know it sounds super hippie-dippy, but she’s absolutely right. It all starts with OUR attitudes and OUR reactions to the world around us. It’s hard, but a little more kindness would go a looooooooooong way, especially these days. We need to counter the nasty, divisive culture. That doesn’t mean we don’t stick up for ourselves when we’re being attacked. It doesn’t mean we don’t speak the truth and dismantle ridiculous political and cultural ideas. It doesn’t mean we don’t mess up and snap. It happens. We’re human. But kindness isn’t partisan. And sure– it comes easier for some people. That’s just reality.
Bure went on to say that her time on “The View” inspired– at least in part– her book.
“I really did enjoy being on the show but it was tough at times. It’s tough to be the only voice at a table that has one specific viewpoint,” Bure said. “I always wanted to be respectful and kind at the end of the day.”
See? That’s one place that I would have a REALLY tough time being “kind.” I’d have to go the more “speak truth in love” (with a tad of spice) route.
She also said we can’t mistake kindness for weakness. It doesn’t mean you’re a doormat. You can be confident, knowledgeable and kind.
“There was nothing weak about me at the table when I sat at ‘The View,'” she said. “But I was always kind.”
That’s true. She really was. I remember. In fact, I remember wishing she was LESS kind. (Yeah yeah, I admit it.)

She also made an appearance on her old show, “The View.” Joy Behar asked her if she’s ever snapped, and Bure was all, “Well yeah!” But here’s the thing “We have grace. It’s renewed every day.”
Amen, sister.
She also told a story of how sweet Whoopi was to her on the set of the show on the morning of the shooting in San Bernardino. The story alone proves her point. It changed the way I saw Whoopi. I saw her as a human with a heart and not a partisan, hateful lib.
A simple act of kindness did that, and it has a ripple effect.
I might just have to read this book!
