To attend or not to attend, that *was* the question.
With his son Don Jr.’s wedding fast approaching this Memorial Day weekend, President Trump had to make some tough decisions regarding his RSVP.
Donald Trump Jr. plans to wed Bettina Anderson in a small ceremony on a private island in the Bahamas, Page Six reported on Tuesday, and the president said he was going to “try” to attend, but was not sure whether he’d be able to make it happen.
“He’d like me to go, but it’s going to be just a small little private affair, and I’m going to try and make it,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday.
His explanation was simple: the timing, given everything going on in Iran and around the world, was not great as far as he was concerned.
“This is not good timing for me. Everything called Iran and other things,” he said, adding that there was no answer he could give that would not get him into trouble with someone.
“That’s one I can’t win on. If I do attend, I get killed. If I don’t attend, I get killed,” he said, implying that there would likely be negative coverage from the press if he missed his son’s wedding — and no shortage of negative coverage if he left Washington to attend.
Well, after giving the situation some pondering, the POTUS has ultimately decided not to attend the nuptials. He released a statement on Friday on Truth Social detailing his decision.
“While I very much wanted to be with my son, Don Jr., and the newest member of the Trump Family, his soon to be wife, Bettina, circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so. I feel it is important for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House during this important period of time. Congratulations to Don and Bettina! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
This was undoubtedly a tough decision, but I think President Trump made the right choice. It’s his job to put the needs of the country first, and jetting off to a tropical island doesn’t look great during a war. On top of that, Memorial Day weekend is an important time to honor the troops as our Commander in Chief. Overall, this isn’t a great weekend to schedule a wedding.
And anyway, Don Jr. and Bettina Anderson are technically already married as of Thursday, with Fox News reporting they wed in a “quiet ceremony” and that the “license was signed by a Palm Beach County deputy clerk.” My guess is this is because they are having a destination wedding and wanted to ensure the legal side of the marriage was squared away before the PAR-TAY.
What do you think? Should President Trump have opted to attend?
