President Trump called Vladimir Putin to congratulate him on his election win. Trump said it was a “very good call.”
I get that we’re supposed to be polite and diplomatic with foreign leaders, but yeah. I wish he didn’t do that.
Sen. John McCain ripped into him. He said Trump insulted “every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election to determine their country’s future.”
“An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections,” McCain said in a statement. “And by doing so with Vladimir Putin, President Trump insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election to determine their country’s future, including the countless Russian patriots who have risked so much to protest and resist Putin’s regime.”
Reporters asked Sarah Sanders about the Russian election. Was it free and fair? Her response didn’t satisfy them.
“…what we do know is that Putin has been elected in their country, and that’s not something that we can dictate to them how they operate,” she said.
Q: Does the WH believe the election in Russia was free and fair? @PressSec: “…what we do know is that Putin has been elected in their country, and that’s not something that we can dictate to them how they operate.” https://t.co/S9S2eIGLnC pic.twitter.com/L2UeSYRGAJ

I mean, she’s right. We can’t tell them how to operate, but I have a problem with congratulating leaders for “winning” elections that weren’t truly fair and free.
Sanders basically said that an ongoing dialogue with Russia is necessary, and that’s that.
.@PressSec: “The president, once again, has maintained that it’s important for us to have a dialogue with Russia so that we can focus on some areas of shared interest…at the same time, we are going to continue to be tough on them.” https://t.co/S9S2eIGLnC pic.twitter.com/OmeP3MIlK0

.@MajorCBS: “Does the White House disagree with Senator McCain’s characterization of this as a ‘sham election’?” @PressSec: “We disagree with the fact that we shouldn’t have conversations with Russia.” https://t.co/S9S2eIGLnC pic.twitter.com/2J9yLJuRNh

Meghan McCain was disgusted by Sanders’ take.
This is a complete embarrassment – Sarah Huckabee Sanders won’t answer directly if Russsia’s election was free and fair. Slap in the face to those of us who STILL defend freedom & democracy and disavow brutal dictatorship regimes.

Your take? Who’s right here?
