France Prohibits Couple From Naming Their Daughter Liam Because It Could Cause “Gender Confusion.”

I am trying to process this story that I just read.

So according to that sourcelink, there’s a couple in France who recently gave birth to a baby girl, and they wanted to name her Liam. Apparently, in France, you don’t have full say over what you name your own kid, and prosecutors there argued, SUCCESSFULLY, that the couple should be prevented from naming their daughter Liam because it could lead to “gender confusion.”

I’m not even making that up.

The prosecutor claimed that naming the girl Liam would be “contrary to the interest of the child and could harm her in her social relations.”

REALLY?

To back up this theory, the prosecutor gave LIAM NEESON as an example, along with Liam Gallagher, saying, basically, “SEE? Those are famous men named Liam and therefore you will completely mess up this kid’s gender identity forever if you name her Liam.”

The parents of the baby girl are lawyering up, but given that this is even a case to begin with doesn’t bode well. I mean, if France sees fit to get involved in child-naming, I’m not seeing a win for these parents. No trial date has been set.

Apparently, until as late as 1993, French parents could only choose a name for their baby from an approved list laid out by the government. President Mitterand did away with that rule, but courts still have the power to ban names if they believe it’ll be harmful to the child. For example, the names Nutella and Manhattan have been banned in previous cases.

Can we just take a moment to process how absolutely ridiculous it is that French authorities could be worried about the name Liam causing gender confusion in a girl, while at the same time all across modern cultures we have social justice weirdos insisting that they’re “genderfluid” and “non-binary” and “genderqueer” and “crystakinpangender” or whatever other ridiculous words they’re coming up with on an hourly basis? What parents choose to name their kids is of practically no consequence whatsoever. We’ve got a way bigger culture war on our hands.

Now, that said, we live in a free country where people can name their kids things like “Slagathor” and “Ta-A” (pronounced TaDasha). And of course there was that case that made news several years ago about the couple who named their kid Adolph Hitler (and that child ended up in foster care for unrelated but unsurprising reasons). I’m not saying people don’t make really terrible decisions about kids’ names. I’m just saying I’d rather they be free to make those terrible decisions, then told by a court that they can’t name their daughter Liam.

The parents trying to name their baby girl Liam should show the courts a picture of this person, who appeared on the cover of French Vogue. THIS is what “gender confusion” looks like.
