President Trump Recently Spoke To Mitt Romney On The Phone

Once upon a time, Mitt Romney and President Trump hated each other. Romney called Trump a “phony” and a “fraud” and mocked his “lousy hat,” and Trump called Romney one of the “dumbest and worst candidates in the history of Republican politics.”

They’ve since made up…kind of.

You see, since Orrin Hatch is, indeed, retiring. Mitt Romney has his eye on the seat. President Trump knows he needs an ally. It looks like they’re putting their differences aside. They spoke on the phone Thursday night, which further suggests that Romney is seriously considering a run.

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about the details of the conversation.

The two men spoke briefly Thursday night. The White House says they spoke about Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, who is retiring after four decades. Hatch’s departure opens the door for Romney, who has been a frequent critic of Trump in the past.

Trump had urged Hatch to run again.

Romney now lives in Utah, where he’s fondly regarded as the man who helped turn around Salt Lake City’s scandal-plagued 2002 Winter Olympics. During the last presidential campaign, Romney called then-candidate Trump “a fraud” who had “neither the temperament nor the judgment to be president.”

Romney’s probably running. Why else would he touch base with Trump?
