It’s that time of year. FALL! It’s right around the corner. It’s my favorite time of year. I love the cooler weather, holidays, fall attire and yes– pumpkin spice. I am that irritating person. I’m currently running a pumpkin candle in my room, and I practically bought out Bath and Body Works’ seasonal Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte lotion. (I walked into a store the other day, and a lady told me I smelled like a bakery, which is obviously the dream.) I will buy anything pumpkin spice at least once. You guys– last year I bought pumpkin spice ham. I AM THAT PERSON. I saw it at the deli and mocked it and ordered it two minutes later. (BTW– it was delicious, and I would buy it again.) So far this year, I’ve purchased pumpkin candles, a pumpkin car freshener, pumpkin popcorn, pumpkin lotion and pumpkin Special K. I also purchased pumpkin socks. They don’t smell like pumpkin spice. They just have pumpkins on them. I’m not THAT crazy. (On second thought, I would definitely buy pumpkin scented socks, so I take that back.)
I AM SO SORRY ABOUT THIS KIMBER.
For all intents and purposes, I am what the millennials would call #basic. I love pumpkin everything, including the beloved pumpkin spice lattes.
So, imagine how surprised I was to hear that those bad boys are funding white supremacy.
That’s right. A feminist group called UltraViolet is currently attempting to convince everyone that Starbucks’ pumpkin spice lattes are contributing to white supremacy.
Shaunna Thomas, a co-founder of the women’s group, explained:
“The fact that Starbucks continues to line Donald Trump’s pocket flies in the face of the higher ethical standard the company claims to have. Words are cheap and op-eds are meaningless when Starbucks spends millions on leases in Trump properties, putting money directly into the pockets of a racist, misogynistic bigot.
“Pumpkin spice just doesn’t taste as good when you add a shot of racism, and Starbucks customers deserve to know that their favorite products, including the recently rolled out pumpkin spice lattes, help put money into Donald Trump’s pocket. If Starbucks and Howard Schultz are serious about living up to the values and ideals that they claim – it’s time to take real action when it comes to denouncing hate and sever all financial ties to Donald Trump and the Trump Organization.”
In other words, UltraViolet is mad because Starbucks has stores in Trump properties. That’s what this is REALLY about. This is their logic:
Trump is a racist. Starbucks has stores on his properties. Therefore, if you buy a latte at a place that willingly set up a store in a building owned by a KNOWN RACIST, you are directly supporting white supremacy.
That’s the way those yahoos think.
UltraViolet has a petition and everything. It reads:
The President of the United States is defending white supremacists and neo-Nazis. This is a national emergency and accountability is critical.
The most important thing to Trump is his money and business ties. Yesterday was a bad day for him as dozens of his business councils rebuked then abandoned him.
But that’s not enough. Starbucks and Nike–both companies that seek to profit off of a progressive and inclusive brand–have stores in Trump Tower in New York City. They have likely paid millions of dollars in rent to Trump over time–money that has given him a platform to spew hate for years.
That needs to stop now. If there’s a line where everyone should agree that business cannot go on as usual, it’s when Trump starts propping up white supremacists and Nazis. Will you sign the petition to Starbucks and Nike?
Obviously, purchasing a PSL doesn’t actually contribute to white supremacy, because Trump is not a white supremacist. This is just another insufferable bogus PR stunt.
Drink on, #basic babes.
