Transgender Activists Say The Women’s March Wasn’t Inclusive Enough

“How the Women’s March’s ‘genital-based’ feminism isolated the transgender community.” That’s an actual headline I recently stumbled upon. Whenever I see headlines that absurd, I can’t help myself. They suck me in every stinkin’ time.

The gist of the article is pretty simple. Transgender activists are mad, because the Women’s March on Washington wasn’t inclusive enough. No– they’re not talking about the fact that organizers effectively shunned pro-life feminists. They’re mad because the march perpetuated the archaic idea that a vagina is essential to womanhood. I mean, did you see how many ladyparts signs protesters brought?

No fair! Some people who identify as women don’t have uteruses, so how can they possibly relate to that sign?

Again, some individuals who identify as women don’t have p*ssys, so they’re totally feeling left out here. They can’t joke about theirs having teeth!

Not everyone has shiny vaginas. So offensive.

Plus, they all wore p*ssy hats. And HELLO. SOME PEOPLE DON’T HAVE THOSE!

So now, there’s a big fight between trans-exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs) and transwomen. Basically, transwomen feel excluded, because the ridiculous hagalicious feminists who marched on Washington couldn’t stop talking about their vaginas. Transwomen don’t have those, which makes them feel illegitimate. (Which makes sense, because they’re biological males, but that’s another post for another day.)

You should also know that there are two kinds of TERFs. TERFs who unknowingly alienate transwomen and TERFs who believe transwomen are nothing more than dudes who are trying to steal their thunder.

Because of that, many people from the LGBT community didn’t feel comfortable participating in the march.

For 20-year-old Sam Forrey, a nonbinary student in Ohio, and their girlfriend Lilian McDaniel, who is trans, there had been other warning signs that the Women’s March might be a dangerous space for them.

I still can’t get over how Mic actually used the pronoun “their” seriously.

Forrey said that a blurb from the Cut’s “Ultimate Guide to Preparing for the Women’s March” suggesting trans protesters bring identification that matches their gender identity or use the “buddy system” had been the first red flag.

 

Since legally McDaniel’s sex is still male, she worried that if she were to be arrested she would be placed in a men’s jail, a concern she said always lingers at the back of her mind. McDaniel said she’d planned on attending the march despite these fears — until she saw that people were using it as an excuse to invoke what she called “genital-based” womanhood.

Why would McDaniel be arrested? Was he/she planning on destroying public property or smashing Starbucks windows? Don’t break the law, and you won’t get arrested. Let’s move on to the next ridiculous problem.

A friend told McDaniel about a protester they’d seen marching with a two-foot-tall hand-knit uterus. She was glad she stayed home.

 

“I think it ended up being a white cis women march,” McDaniel said. “There were other marginalized communities there, but it didn’t seem like they were the focus.”

“The main reason I decided not to go was because of the pussy hats,” another transwoman said. “I get that they’re a response to the ‘grab them by the pussy’ thing, but I think some people fixated on it the wrong way.”

 

“I believe there’s a lot of inequality that has to do with genitals—that’s not something you can separate from the feminist movement,” the transwoman added. “But I feel like I’ve tried to get involved in feminism and there’s always been a blockade there for trans women.”

I’m sick of the vagina related stuff too, but for different reasons, obviously. I don’t like being reduced to my reproductive organs. But transwomen feel left out because they can’t be included in the reduction.

There’s so much outrage to keep track of. I have trouble keeping up. If nothing else, at least you learned a new term today. TERFs. You’re welcome.
