BREAKING: Shots Fired In U.S. Capitol Visitor Center

According to reports from Fox News, police shot an alleged gunman after he drew his weapon inside the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center Monday afternoon.

Here’s what we know at this point:

There were conflicting reports about who, if anyone, was wounded besides the alleged gunman.

 

Initial reports said a U.S. Capitol Police officer had been shot. But a federal law enforcement source briefed on the incident now tells Fox News no officers were hurt during the incident.

 

A bystander was said to be injured, though no other details were immediately available.

I should note, Fox News just reported that a female bystander suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital. So that looks to be true.

The alleged gunman himself was being taken to the hospital — Fox News is told officers fired on him when he pulled a gun after setting off a metal detector.

He is now in custody.

Authorities seem to believe it was a lone incident, and they don’t believe any other parts of the city are at risk of a similar attack. Word has it the suspect has a history of causing trouble in DC. Still, the shooting sent both the White House and Capitol Complex into lockdown.

“While this is preliminary information, based on the initial investigation we believe this is the act of a single person who has frequented the Capitol grounds before,” Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said . “There is no reason to believe this is anything more than a criminal act.”
