How Many Foreigners Are Here On Expired Visas? No One Knows

Not even the U.S. government.

A recent congressional hearing between Rep. Mark Meadows and the assistant secretary for international affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, Alan Bersin, revealed how completely bogus our entire foreign visa program is.

When asked the number of foreigners in the U.S. with expired visas, the official said, “We don’t know.”

Comforting.

Nearly 20 years ago, Congress passed a law requiring the federal government to develop a system to track people who overstayed their visas. After the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, an entry and exit tracking system was seen as a vital national security and counterterrorism tool, and the 9/11 Commission recommended that the Department of Homeland Security complete a system “as soon as possible.” Two of the 9/11 hijackers, Satam al-Suqami and Nawaf al-Hazmi, had overstayed their visas.

 

Since then, the federal government has spent millions of dollars on the effort, yet officials can only roughly estimate the number of people in the United States illegally after overstaying visas.

So we have officials– who are PAID to know this kind of stuff– guessing numbers. Conservatives often cite an Immigration and Naturalization Service report from 1997, which estimated that 40 percent of foreigners overstay their visas.

“If we’re looking at visa overstays, and sitting here debating a visa waiver program, and yet, the very instance of visa overstays and the potential terrorist threat that accompanies that, you’re tracking that, yet the last information Congress got was 1994,” Rep. Meadows said during the hearing. “Do you not see a problem with that?”

Nah. No problems. While we’re on the subject, did you know top DHS official Kelli Burriesci doesn’t know number of Americans that have traveled to and from Syria, refugees that have entered the country in the last year or number of Visa Waiver Program overstays in general?

Heck, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz doesn’t even know what illegal means.
