Don’t you just love big, bureaucratic government? It’s fantastic.
According to this, a Williamson PreK-8 teacher in West Virginia faced a fine for rewarding students with little pieces of wrapped candy.
I guess if you like your candy, you can’t keep your candy. And if you don’t follow the rules, you’ll be fined. Sound familiar?
Because this teacher violated the Michelle Obama inspired federal nutritional guidelines, the “incident” (I can’t even believe we have to call this an incident) had to be reported to the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE).
The good thing about this? Parents were fed up and started a fundraiser to help the teacher in question.
The Mingo County Schools Director of Child Nutrition Kay Maynard said that the teacher didn’t deliberately break the rules. She was just trying to reward and encourage her students. WVDE took that into consideration and decided to come up with a less severe form of discipline, like requiring the school’s staff members “to develop a corrective action plan to include training on child nutrition policies.”
All of this, you guys. Over wrapped candy. You might be thinking, “Why are they making such a big deal out of it?” Easy. They could lose federal money. The truth is, when the federal government is involved, rules get weird and nothing makes sense.
Mingo County Schools released a statement stating the WVBOE guidelines were developed to help educators encourage students to make healthy decisions. If not followed, schools can be required to return federal food service money, lose eligibility for state and federal food service programs, or bring about similar consequences to the entire county.
