The way that galleries describe their art pieces. It’s totally absurd.
According to this, a photo of two brothers kissing, while one holds a gun to the other’s chest, is described as follows:
“In this provocative center image, the brothers exchange a passionate kiss as Thomas presses a gun into Lyle’s chest–conjuring the original biblical story of Cain’s treachery toward his brother, Abel. The image transgresses many dualisms we use to structure society: male versus female, black versus white, ‘brotherly love’ versus homosexual desire. And it raises provocative questions surrounding themes of domestic abuse between lovers, perceived violence among black men, and the dangers that come from engaging in an ‘illicit’ love–whether it be from disease, homophobia, or a lethal combination of the two.â€
Really? That’s what you get out of this?
I mean, come ON.
That photo is just one part of an exhibit at the Smithsonian that’s got people’s feathers ruffled. Other pieces include images of Jesus covered in ants, some male genitalia, some dudes in chains, and Ellen DeGeneres grabbing her own boobular area. It’s ART, you guys. And you know who’s paying for that exhibit? Why, us taxpayers, of course.
Many people see the entire exhibit as an assault on Christianity, and you could make a case for that, especially given that there is NO POSSIBLE WAY an exhibit featuring Mohammed or the Koran in any compromising way would dare ever appear in a museum.
The biggest outrage is that this pile of crap exhibit is being federally funded. But according to this, that’s a total over-reaction. See, even though over half of the Smithsonian budget IS federally funded, those monies are only used to “pay for buildings, the care of collections exhibited at Smithsonian venues, and museum staff.” Ohhhhh. See? Taxpayer dollars aren’t paying for the exhibit at all! They’re just paying for everything related to the exhibit. They’re simply paying for all the stuff that’s required in order to HAVE the exhibit. But the exhibit itself? TOTALLY NOT PAID FOR BY OUR TAXES. Don’t you see?
Anyway, you need to click the first source link so you can see some of the “art” for yourself. And read the descriptions of it, so you can be amused by them too.
