This Will Come As A Total Shock To You…

Meet the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), who, via their own website, describes what they do as follows:

Security touches on many aspects of the way we live and are governed. The OSCE's comprehensive view of security covers three “dimensions”: the politico-military; the economic and environmental; and the human.  The OSCE's activities cover all three of these areas, from "hard" security issues such as conflict prevention to fostering economic development, ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources, and promoting the full respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Blah blah bladdie blah.  I'll translate.  They're basically a UN group that's monitoring OUR elections.

The OSCE has been an active "observer" of our elections since 2002, describing themselves as a "leading organization in the field of election observation, (conducting) election-related activities….including technical assistance and election observation missions."  Since 2002, they've done so without incident, but in light of "Republicans accusing Democrats of voter fraud while Democrats counter that GOP-inspired voter ID laws aim to disenfranchise minority voters," Texas lawmakers are now paying WAY more attention to this European organization.

Consequently, Texas' Attorney General Greg Abbott isn't a big fan of the OSCE.  He sent a letter "warning the organization that its representatives are not authorized by Texas to enter a polling place and that it may be a criminal offense for OSCE's representatives to maintain a presence within 100 feet of a polling place's entrance."

Why would he do such a mean ol' thing, you ask?  Well, one, because Texas has an enormous set of American balls.  And two, because the OSCE has "met with liberal organizations who oppose (Republican-backed) Voter ID laws."  And as it turns out, the OSCE doesn't like that whole Voter ID thing. They've said so.  In writing.

I know….I'm really shocked, too.  Imagine a U.N. organization being a bunch of left-wingers (insert eye-roll here).

Being the huge slice of awesome that it is, Texas is basically giving the OSCE the proverbial middle finger.  And I DIG THEM FOR THAT.

Abbott's letter to the OSCE included the following (emphasis mine):

“The OSCE may be entitled to its opinions about Voter ID laws, but your opinion is legally irrelevant in the United States, where the Supreme Court has already determined that Voter ID laws are constitutional,” Abbott wrote. “If OSCE members want to learn more about our election processes so they can improve their own democratic systems, we welcome the opportunity to discuss the measures Texas has implemented to protect the integrity of elections. However, groups and individuals from outside the United States are not allowed to influence or interfere with the election process in Texas.”

Ooooh, SNAP.

Of course, the OSCE has written Texas back, assuring everyone that they're just going to be present at our elections to "observe" and that they'll absolutely follow our laws and be nice and whatnot, but they are now painfully aware that, um, guess what, U.N.?  DO NOT MESS WITH TEXAS.  And if you try to give your little unsolicited opinion about our United States Constitution and expect to be welcomed with open arms to "observe" our American elections?

Uh uh. Don't let the door hit your butts on the way out.

And that, clever and competent readers, is why I adoreTexas.
