UC-Santa Barbara’s Multicultural Center Claims “Zionists Not Welcome,” Shuts Down Next Day

We’re living in a sick, sick society right now. It’s painful to witness.

The University of California-Santa Barbara suspended its “Multicultural Center” just a day after the center made clear that Jews were not welcome and suggested that Jews drink blood.

The Multicultural Center MCC held a “collective action” on Monday, where visible signs in the doors read “Zionists not welcome.” Signs in the windows said “F— pinkwashing. Queers for Palestine,” “Zionism is terrorism,” and “when people are occupied, resistance is justified.”

There were more than 100 signs inside the building, including “Dykes 4 Palestine,” “DEI is white supremacy,” “Zionists — just say you hate black, brown and indigenous,” and some that targeted the student association president for being “neutral.”

Chancellor Henry T. Yang  wrote in an email to students that there were “offensive social media messages and signage at the Multicultural Center entrance. Campus offices are reviewing these unauthorized and unofficial messages,” the school paper reported. “The posting of such messages is a violation of our principles of community and inclusion.”

The Multicultural Center (MCC) social media “invoked antisemitism, including the notorious blood libel, saying: ‘Why does our school support a regime to feast on the blood of our fellow humans,’” USCB’s Hillel, a Jewish group, said. “For over 24 hours, these messages went unchallenged while extremist elements celebrated the latest attempt to harass, bully, and intimidate Jewish students.”

The UCSB MCC’s official Instagram account wrote “in case we aren’t clear, let us spell it out” above a picture of the front doors with signs saying “Zionists not welcome.”

Well… so much for that whole “diversity” and “inclusion” platform, huh?

One of my focus areas for my degree plan is Jewish Studies, and it will act as one of the minors that I pair with my BA. I want to be a historian of the Holocaust because I feel like it’s important for people to remember, and no one really seems to care anymore. This semester has me digging much deeper into the history of antisemitism – namely, the spikes in antisemitism leading up to Hitler’s ascension, WWII, and the Shoah.

It’s incredible to me how, as we speak, we’re doing what we promised we wouldn’t do: we’re forgetting. It was this kind of widespread hatred that the world said it would “never forget,” and yet, here we are – not even a century later – and it’s happening again.

Just as it was in the 30s and 40s, the key to the entire operation is the important role held by the up-and-coming “adults” that occupy college campuses. If you can convince the young people to take your bait hook, line, and sinker, then you’ve got yourself the foot soldiers for your movement. They’re just gullible enough to buy into the mirage (you have to be pretty f*cking gullible to ignore the oxymoron that is “Queers for Palestine”…).

This is infuriating to watch. Antisemitism was not defeated with the surrender of the Axis and the liberation of the concentration camps, though many people attempt to comfort themselves by using this line of thinking. Antisemitism, like all other forms of hate, is taught. Until we begin to value teaching true tolerance, acceptance, and inclusion, then we’re doomed to fall into the same patterns of hate that ultimately lead to death and destruction.

Many of the same people who claim they would have been on the right side of history during Hitler’s reign of terror fall silent now. What does that say about us?
