Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker delivered a rather unexpected and heartfelt commencement speech to the grads of Georgia Institute of Technology. As an extremely successful two-time Super Bowl Champion, the Catholic man spoke about what really matters in this life, saying, “In the end, no matter how much money you attain, none of it will matter if you are alone and devoid of purpose.” He correctly stated that “our culture is suffering” and that “anyone with eyes can see it.” After briefly mentioning the historic depression, loneliness, and suffering currently experienced by many of the rising generation, he encouraged graduates to “take stock of their mission.”
But his speech wasn’t doom and gloom. He also offered what he called “one controversial antidote” to falling into the trap of loneliness and lack of purpose. And he’s right–it is controversial. But he’s also right that it is the antidote. His advice?
“Get married and start a family.”
