In 2005, after the horrifying terrorist attack of 9/11, the Bush/Cheney administration allowed government agencies like the NSA to start illegally surveilling Americans under the guise of national security concerns involving terrorism. You know, the same old “for the greater good” argument that has justified authoritarian power grabs throughout history. Most people think it’s a conspiracy theory when someone says that the government is listening. But they are because they’re allowed to. And that’s because, in 2008, instead of punishing the illegally spying on American citizens, they simply passed a law known as Section 702 to basically start pretending like it was legal all along.
Now, the Biden Administration wants Congress to renew this controversial law that allows warrantless surveillance of American citizens. Of course they do. The Biden Administration is impressively authoritarian. Would anyone be surprised if government agencies used it to root out things like “white supremacy,” “racism,” and “bigotry?” And hey, they might surveil a few school board moms and say they’re monitoring terrorist activity as a throwback to the inception of the illegal spying. And not a single American would be surprised by this.
The Biden administration urged Congress on Tuesday to renew a controversial warrantless surveillance law, known as Section 702, emphasizing that security officials use it for a range of foreign policy and national security goals like detecting espionage. https://t.co/JijRDdM1Pk
