A truck carrying 2,000 pounds of liquid nitric acid tipped over on Arizona’s I-10 in Tucson. The spill of the toxic substance created a cloud of yellow smoke, prompting Arizona officials to issue a “shelter in place” warning for nearby residents, declaring a hazmat emergency, and evacuating the area. Authorities report that the driver of the truck has died as a result of the accident. Residents received emergency alerts on their phones advising them to shelter in place to avoid exposure to the toxic material.
This disaster comes after the recent train derailment disaster in East Palestine, Ohio, spilling toxic vinyl chloride which was then burned. Some industry professionals have likened it to a Chernobyl disaster in the Ohio river basin.
