Sen. Warren Called Out For Misleading Claim That “President Has The Legal Authority To Cancel Student Debt”

First of all, let’s be super clear here, as I have been before on this issue. Even the term “cancel student debt” is incredibly misleading because that’s not actually how it works. It doesn’t just get “cancelled” and then magically disappear. That’s not how debt works. Someone pays the debt in some way. If not the student who took out the loan, then the people who fund the institution pretending to “cancel” the debt. And if not through a traditional monetary downpayment on the debt, then through inflation subsequent to the government losing all that federal money after “cancelling” the debts. Y’all, the debt gets paid. It doesn’t get cancelled.

But Leftist politicians are used to basically saying whatever they want and never being called out for how misleading and disingenuous it is. And that’s what Senator Warren just did. She took to Twitter to announce that she wanted to “be clear” that “the President has the legal authority to cancel student debt.” Which is actually false and misleading on multiple fronts, and Twitter users took the opportunity to fact-check her. I don’t know what exactly changed, but once Elon Musk took over, the “Birdwatch” user fact-checking program suddenly started adding context tags to lying Leftist posts, including the official White House and POTUS accounts. I’ll be completely honest, I’m conflicted in my feelings about it, but at least now they aren’t lying with impunity.

Firstly, there’s the issue of that word “cancel.” She doesn’t care that she’s being misleading and disingenuous about what would really be happening to that debt and what the financial consequences would be for this alleged “cancellation” plan. She’s happy making it seem like it just magically disappears. And it’s sleazy for her to do that. But she’s also dead wrong about the President having the legal authority to “cancel” student debt. Two different federal district courts have ruled that the President does NOT have the legal authority to “cancel” student debt, and the Biden Administration’s scheme will now advance to the Supreme Court for a decision.

Interestingly, a number of prominent Democrats have also spoken out about the illegality of the student debt “cancellation” scheme. Well, at least they did before they realized they needed to do it whether it was legal or not. Notably, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said that President Biden does not have the authority to forgive student debt and said it was “not even a discussion.” That is, until it WAS a discussion and then a plan on which they campaigned to score votes. Because a little detail like legality is barely even a consideration for these people.
