I read this piece in The Atlantic yesterday and legit LOLd, and then just found myself in a state of absolute disbelief that Emily Oster wrote something this stupid.
I tweeted about it right after reading it, and said this:
This entire article is infuriating. https://t.co/5oH2Syr50Q

"Our cloth masks made out of old bandanas wouldn’t have done anything, anyway. But the thing is: We didn’t know." YES WE F*CKING DID. And the scaremongers continued to scaremonger. We've RUINED kids. And for what?
Yeah. I have strong feelings about this one. There can be no “pandemic amnesty” until there’s actually pandemic ACCOUNTABILITY. No one has taken any. People were forbidden to attend family member’s funerals, kids lost out in a multitude of ways we’re just now discovering, businesses closed down, people lost their jobs and livelihoods. Those of us who knew how utterly stupid it was for “health experts” to tell us all to wear freaking folded up bandanas over our faces were called every name in the book and told we were murderers if we didn’t comply.
Emily shouldn’t be asking for forgiveness. Being forgiven requires an acknowledgement of wrongdoing first, and a genuine apology for the horrendous treatment that people fighting for freedom during Covid were subjected to. Emily writes:
The people who got it right, for whatever reason, may want to gloat. Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts. All of this gloating and defensiveness continues to gobble up a lot of social energy and to drive the culture wars, especially on the internet. These discussions are heated, unpleasant and, ultimately, unproductive. In the face of so much uncertainty, getting something right had a hefty element of luck. And, similarly, getting something wrong wasn’t a moral failing. Treating pandemic choices as a scorecard on which some people racked up more points than others is preventing us from moving forward.
I’m not gloating. I’m freaking pissed. And those who “got it wrong” shouldn’t feel defensive, they should feel overwhelming shame. It WAS a moral failure – every lockdown, every closure, every restrictive mandate – ALL of those were moral failures that should have consequences for the perpetrators of them.
Guess who pounced at the opportunity to agree with Emily’s pandemic amnesty garbage?
Of course you do. Because you were 100% wrong on school shutdowns and refuse to apologize for it. If you had any decency at all, you’d resign for presiding over the greatest American education failure of our lives. https://t.co/9Nj0UpRfUW

Randi is a shameless seahag who is PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE for the suffering of kids over the past two years. She is PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE for the loss of learning. She is a disgrace.
Now, hide yo’ kids and hide yo’ wives, because this guy has a message for Emily. And it’s crass but perfect.
This video is in response to the @TheAtlantic article about “pandemic amnesty” and it’s a much watch. This man is so right on. pic.twitter.com/ZuuA9tIloD

During the pandemic, I had to go to the same groomer as my golden retriever, Charlie. I think the groomer . . . I know she likes him better, but then the groomer knows me as she is my wife.
I was given the traditional mutt cut. The shame. Of course, being an attorney, I have learned to ignore such emotions as shame.
I agree, first we need some accountability, especially for putting sick people in nursing homes. When are those people’s relatives going to get some justice?
I totally agree, Kurt – those families SHOULD get justice. Unfortunately, the crimes were all (I think) committed by Democrats, so I’m not holding my breath for that justice to ever come.
On a side note, I didn’t know you were an attorney. And you seemed like such a nice person, too… 🙂 (just kidding, of course!)
They don’t want amnesty or forgiveness, they couldn’t care less about those things. They only want cover from rightful punishment they are due for their gross negligence during the pandemic.
“In the face of so much uncertainty, getting something right had a hefty element of luck.”
What uncertainty? People with basic levels of knowledge on the matter had better predictive skills than the “highly educated” which tells me it’s not a “hefty element of luck” but problems with modern and higher education and actual misinformation combined with revisionist history being spread with a clear political bias.
Here in Michigan, the now-governor’s campaign slogan was “Fix the damn roads!”. She put us on lockdowns, which prevented road crews from doing their jobs and closed schools for two years. Now that the hosebeast is running for re-election, the roads are being repaired and she blatantly lied about the two-year school closures to her Republican opponent during their second debate recently.
My bans are still in place (granted, it was only meaningless internet bans, but still). And I was denied entry into “grocery” stores (Walmart, Dollar General). Until we get prominent, public apologies, all the fear worshippers can f— right off.
