
Yup. After a measly 45 days in office, the British Prime Minister Liz Truss has officially resigned.
To say this news is “shocking” would be generous; the Daily Star, after all, had a “Liz vs. Lettuce” livestream in which they pitted the PM against a head of lettuce to see who would last longer. The lettuce won.
In a statement made outside 10 Downing Street, Truss explained,
“I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability. Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills.”
“I recognize, though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”
So what’s next? Most likely a general election next week, which my insider sources (read: husband and mother-in-law) tell me is very welcome.
