Politico has reported that Vice President Kamala Harris has just hired her THIRD chief speechwriter since entering office last year. Dave Cavell, the new speechwriter, was previously the speechwriter for John Kerry, a White House speechwriter during Obama’s final year, and several other politicians. But apparently, “another selling point Cavell brought with him is that he’s a lawyer like both Harris and her husband.”
I’ve joked before that her speechwriters should be fired because one of the very few things for which Kamala Harris is well known is that she is TERRIBLE at giving speeches. And we’re all familiar with her incredible and embarrassing word salads. She’s almost as bad as Joe Biden.
Interestingly, Politico mentions that the previous speechwriter, Meghan Groom, who left after only a few months, “never fully meshed with the Vice President, in part because she worked outside the White House campus instead of in the Vice President’s office. Asked why she worked off-campus, Harris’ office declined to comment. Groob did not respond to attempts to reach her.”
I wouldn’t want to spend any more time with Kamala Harris than absolutely necessary, either, so I’d probably work off-campus as well.
Another interesting insight was Politico’s discussion about how Groob got hired in the first place. At the time, Groob was applying against Christopher Huntley, and the two were required to submit mock speeches which senior officials would assess blindly, without knowledge of who wrote which speech. Groob ultimately got the gig, but Politico reports that “some staffers in the Vice President’s officer privately puled for Huntley because they wanted to see a Black man write for the first Black woman Vice President. They were disappointed he didn’t get the job over Groob.”
I’m actually surprised that merit and not identity politics determined who got the job, because that’s sort of been the name of the game with the Biden Administration.
Interestingly, Australian news is asking whether it’s time to replace Kamala as VP. They say things we’re not allowed to…

I honestly think they should just get a mad libs book and use that for her speeches. At least then she might force some word variety.
Will it help? No. Because Harris is widely known to never prepare.
